Discussing reputation online

Of the comunicative opportunities that modern times bring the web is without doubt the media which changes and renews itself most frequently; on the subject of reputation , it is impossible not to consider the importance that it plays in the world of the internet because :
  • its use is continually expanding: in Italy there are estimated to be more than 18 million users of the internet (source: Nielsen / Net Rating);
  • the demographic characteristics of users, young and on line with the times, make them a very important sector of the market for any company;
  • the way of using the internet is continually changing: the web is becoming more and more important as a source of information and a means of personal communication.

The users of the internet are characterized by a communicative activity never before recorded for the other means of communication, the web is not only a place to find information, but is progressively becoming a platform on which personal opinions are communicated and transmitted.
In this way the web makes a double contribution to reputation through:

  • media communication;
  • word of mouth.

Internet is a medium which is in continual evolution, dynamic and fleeting.

Technorati estimates that there are over 70 million blog in the world (over two million of which are in the Italian language) and that every day about 120.000 blog are created on the web; this wealth of information available on the web constitutes at the same time a threat to the reputation of any organization and an important opportunity to strengthen it.

However, the web is not only an opportunity and threat for reputation of organizations and companies, but also a source of interesting stimuli for the discussion of reputation in general, its importance and dynamics.

Surfing the web it is common to come across very interesting post which stimulates articulated thought on the concept of reputation.

Comments posted testify to the relative freshness on the proposed themes and a discussion that even if alive and dynamic must still become known to the outside world; the concept of reputation has still not entered the common lexicon.

Rather, the diversity of approaches to the subject and the heterogenity of the different bloggers show how the subject is more than ever actual and facetted.
